The Daily Me – Grimaldo Sturfreid

New article image of a Book Cover

Thank you, Grimaldo Sturfreid, for signing up for The Daily Me. Our search engine has combed the Internet for up to the minute news items that fit the profile you have so painstakingly filled out for us. Then, we weighted the probability that you would be interested in these articles against forms which showed what people with tastes similar to yours have liked reading in the past. And, then, life was getting too crazy for us, so we took some time away from the news to think about how much better our lives were in the past. Like how great it was to be in high school, where the only things we had to worry about were interacting with other students without embarrassment and passing our French exam even though the teacher absolutely hated us…and Richard Nixon, whose southern strategy paved the way for politicians pandering to white racists, not to mention the fact that he had to resign in disgrace for ordering the Watergate burglary and trying to cover it up. Okay, bad example. It was much better in university, when all we had to worry about were lecherous professors and having a high enough GPA to get into a good grad school…and Ronald Reagan, who conspired with a foreign country to win the election and was behind the Iran/Contra scandal. Dammit! Okay, forget that noise – it’s so last century! Life was so much more enjoyable when we entered the workplace and all we had to worry about were the crude innuendos of our immediate superior and whether one of our coworkers was angling to get us fired…and George W. Bush lying us into a disastrous war with Iraq.

Oh, for Fuque’s sake! Do Republicans have to ruin everything‽

Enjoy,

Blinken Said He Appreciated That Israel Was Willing To Maintain A Dialogue With The US

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Israel should end the war in Gaza and allow Palestinians and aid to return to the territory. “Israel, by the standards it set itself, has accomplished the strategic goals it set for itself,” Blinken said. “So this should be a time to end the war.”

In response, Israel bombed targets in Lebanon and Gaza. The military action sent a clear message to the United States: “Ha ha – Talk all you want, but I can’t hear you over the sound of explosions! Waddya gonna do about it? Eh? Waddya waddya? Wimps!”

It Could Be Worse: He Could Have Stipulated That Convicts Have To Watch Him Prancing Around On The Stage Behind Trump…At Least Once Every Hour For The Duration Of Their Sentence

Another Tesla caught fire last week, killing all of the people inside it. In response, Elon Musk, owner of the company, sprang into action.

Musk got his good friend Donald Trump to make criticism of Tesla a felony punishable by a term of no less than 12 years in prison.

In Taylor We Trust

Bike lanes. Brain drain.
Never-ending construction for subway trains.

Expensive rents. “Common sense.”
Destruction of the science centre.

A once great city has been cast adrift,
But at least we’ve got Taylor Swift.

Homeless get no space. Renters can’t keep pace.
But there will be a spa at Ontario Place!

Peace breach. Police overreach.
The Mayor can’t do anything but make a fatuous speech.

Between downtown and the suburbs, there is a great rift,
But at least we’ve got Taylor Swift.

Fundraising as populists is a popular Conservative grift,
But at least we’ve got Taylor Swift.

For provincial Conservatives, the destruction of Toronto is a great gift,
But, hey, at least we’ve – *sob* – got Taylor Swift!

Prove Me Wrong – In 240 Words Or Less!

Who destroyed American democracy?

Was it Chief Justice John Roberts, who presided over a lawless court that ruled that money spent during political campaigns was free speech to beprotected by the first amendment, allowing vast amounts of money to be poured into campaigns with no limits or accountability, then ruled that a president was immune from criminal prosecution for many crimes?

Was it Mitch McConnell, who knew that Donald Trump was guilty of an insurrection, but whipped his caucus in the Senate to vote against impeachment? He could have stopped Trump from running again, but chose party over country.

The odds on favourite must be Elon Musk, who basically paid for votes, and who allowed his social media platform, TwitterX, to become a propaganda arm for the Republican Party, not to mention allied fascists.

All worthy answers to the question, to be sure. But I would suggest that American democracy was killed…by the American people.

I’m Sure Vladimir Putin Will Be Happy To Offer His Shoulder For You To Cry On

Jill Stein has thoughts.

The Putin Party candidate for president of the United States complained, “When the pundits try to explain why Kamala Harris lost, they always talk about ineffective messaging on policy this or not connecting with common people that. Blah blah blah. When will they talk about me‽ I siphoned off enough Harris votes in swing states to hand the presidency to Trump, but do I get any credit at all for his victory? Nooooooooooo! Sometimes, being a spoiler candidate feels like a big waste of time!”

Get In Their BMWs And Drive There, Duh!

The Ontario government is moving ahead with plans to eliminate bike lanes in major cities (Toronto) and enact legislation forcing cities (Toronto) to get provincial permission (Toronto) to create new ones. At the same time, Mayors from 13 Ontario cities (not Toronto) signed a letter to Premier Ford asking him to use the Notwithstanding clause of the Constitution to bypass the court system to allow them to evict people living in unhoused encampments sotto voce (literally: any time they want).

As usual, these policies are shortsighted. If they don’t have access to bike lanes, how are unhoused people supposed to get to another encampment when they are evicted from the one they are living in?

“Did I Say The Consequences Of Setting The Precedent Could Be Bad?” Johnson Continued. “I Meant That They Could Be Catastrophic!”

Speaker Mike Johnson has announced that he opposes releasing the House’s Ethics Committee report on Matt Gaetz, claiming that it would set a bad precedent.

When asked what precedent it would set, Johnson replied: “The precedent that I would do anything that wasn’t the will of President Donald Trump!”
