“The Trouble With Normal” by Bruce Cockburn
My Web Goddess wanted French fries, so, since we were out walking, I stopped by the local McDonald’s and bought her the largest box they had. With lots of packets of ketchup, because we’re not barbarians. (We all worship our Goddesses in our own way.)
I couldn’t help but notice that I was the only customer in the restaurant who was wearing a mask (with the Manager, one of only two people in the entire joint). I find this most dismaying. I get that people want their lives to return to normal. But dying is normal, and I don’t want to do that just yet.
I hope the politicians who have lifted mandates are correct and it is now safe to go back to some semblance of normalcy. However, I believe the medical professionals who say it’s too early, that we’re just inviting another spike of illness and death. And, anyway, what the hell? Wearing a mask in a room full of facially naked people isn’t the first time I felt out of step with everybody around me.
